A Yorkshire Housing customer, Dorothy Allardyce, recently celebrated her 105th birthday, so, we went to visit with some flowers and to have a good natter over a brew.
Dorothy lives at our retirement housing scheme, Garth Court in York, where she’s lived for over 20 years, and continues to live independently with the support of Able Carers and B-Independent.
Commenting on her home, Dorothy said she used to love going down to the communal lounge where she’d do chair exercises and play dominos with her friend and neighbour Mary, who still lives above her.
Rima Porter-King, Scheme Manager at Yorkshire Housing said:
“It’s a pleasure to have Dot as a resident on my scheme, and she loved the flowers! We had a lovely chat about her home at Garth Court and being a Yorkshire Housing customer, and it’s great to hear how happy she is there.
“On behalf of everyone at Yorkshire Housing, we wish Dot a very happy 105th birthday!”
A little bit about Dorothy’s life
Dorothy was born in May 1918, during the First World War and worked at Terry’s Chocolate Factory until the Second World War, before moving to Thorp Arch, where she took on the role of a riveter. Her important task involved repairing panels on the iconic Halifax Bombers! Even to this day, Dorothy takes great pride in her contribution to the war effort.
Dorothy was married to her late husband, James, for 39 years. Together, they raised two daughters, and today, Dorothy’s family was expanded to include four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and even one great-great-grandchild!
