“When managers ask me ‘how can I make people happy’, I simply say – ‘ask them!’”
Those are the wise words of Henry Stewart, founder and Chief Happiness Officer at Happy, who recently joined our CEO Nick Atkin for the latest episode of Raising the Roof.
Season three is in full swing and for this episode we wanted to take a deep dive into what makes a happy workplace and what it means to be truly happy.
So, who better to join us than Henry with a job title as joyful as that!
There’s a real focus on creating positive workplaces and at the forefront of this is Henry’s multi award-winning company which has won wide recognition for its innovative approach to management and customer service.
Henry started up Happy in his back room in London over 36 years ago and some of his major clients have since included the British Library, Berkeley Homes and the Clinical Leaders Network amongst hundreds of other big organisations.
We asked Henry if there’s a secret formula to creating a happy workplace – and if he had any top tips to help businesses get there. Here’s a bit of what he had to say:
“Happiness is very subjective – it’s different for introverts and different for extroverts.
“First of all, get people to play to their strengths. Gallup did a survey of over a million people asking ‘do you get to do what you’re best at every day at work?
“Guess what percentage said yes to that? It was actually just 17%.”

Our next guest in season three is Advita Patel, founder of CommsRebel, who’s on a mission to help organisations create inclusive cultures. She joins us to try and solve housing’s diversity problem by breaking down barriers in workplaces and sharing her own inspiring story.
