We’re hosting our annual “Big Day Out” on Tuesday 1st August 2023, with this year’s event promising to be bigger than better than ever before, with over 25 locations across Yorkshire participating in various community activities and initiatives.
Our colleagues are out and about all the time, but once a year they step away from their day-to-day roles to volunteer and engage with the communities we serve, in a different way to what what they normally do. The “BIG Yorkshire Day OUT!” shows our commitment to making a positive difference to our customers and their neighbours.
The event will feature a range of activities designed to benefit local communities, including litter picking, gardening, and informative drop-in sessions. Our colleagues are looking forward to rolling up their sleeves to lend a helping hand wherever it’s needed!
Here are some highlights of what’s happening in different Yorkshire regions:
North Yorkshire
- A fun-filled day will be hosted from 12pm to 3pm at Ingsgarth Community Centre in Pickering, with the aim of raising funds for our charity of the year, Andy’s Man Club. People who attend will be able to enjoy stalls, games, food and of course… a raffle!
- Yorkshire Housing colleagues will also be out and about in Craven, Harrogate, and Ryedale.
South Yorkshire
- Colleagues will be visiting customers living in our retirement schemes, hosting a drop-in café and having a good natter.
- Additionally, our team will be litter picking and gardening in areas such as Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield.
West Yorkshire
- We’ll be at Salisbury Road in Keighley where we'll have inflatables, games, food and music organised between 11am and 2pm. And it won't just be us there, we'll be joined by some of our partners and local charities including Roshni Ghar, Keighley Healthy Living and Age UK too.
- Our colleagues will also be showcasing their handy skills in Bradford, Wakefield, Calderdale, Kirklees, and Leeds. Activities include building a bin store, refreshing communal living spaces with new paintings, setting up outdoor benches, and taking part in general litter picking.
Nick Atkin, Chief Exec of Yorkshire Housing, said:
“What better way to celebrate Yorkshire Day than with our “Big Yorkshire Day Out!” event. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our colleagues to spend some time with our communities and make a really positive impact across the region.
“Come rain or shine – it is a British summer after all - we’ll be out there. We’re looking forward to seeing lots of people out and about across all parts of Yorkshire, so if you do see us, come say hi or give us a wave!”
