When a customer in Marsh expressed a decline in social connection after the pandemic, we knew we needed to help.
We teamed up with Centrepoint, a charity who provide secure accommodation and training for young people at risk of homelessness in Bradford.
Volunteers and young people from Centrepoint donned their overalls and got to work learning new sanding, painting, and decorating techniques to create a ‘chatty bench’ where people could sit and connect with others if they’re feeling lonely.
Volunteer Development Officer, Rachel Neale who helped create the day – alongside Community Independence Officer Julie Lintern - said: “It was incredible to see how the young people really wanted to give up their time to get involved.
“It was a true community effort and an amazing day. People chatted, met up with neighbours, and there was even some singing and dancing to Tom Jones’ songs.”
The brightly coloured bench was born out of a customer request that has gone on to help many in the local area.
Following the success of the volunteer day, we've committed to working longer-term with some of the young people from Centrepoint to get them ready for our upcoming apprenticeship programme.
Each year, we provide dozens of apprenticeships in areas such as Multi-Trade, Ground Maintenance, General Housing and much more.
Investing in apprenticeships means we have future colleagues who are skilled, work-ready and community-minded.
