Yorkshire Housing colleagues join forces for a “big day out” in Wakefield

A group of our colleagues are volunteering in Wakefield to support the community and break the social housing stigma.

Along with our chief executive, Nick Atkin, they’ll be talking to customers in Lupset about where they live, the cost of living, consulting on a local lettings plan, doing a litter pick, and getting into the Christmas spirit with a wreath making session!

The community action day dubbed “The Big Day Out” was born from conversations around the need for a bigger presence in local communities across Yorkshire and to reach customers who may be struggling in silence.

The event on Saturday 10th December will take place between 11am and 2pm, and colleagues will be going door to door around the Snapethorpe Gate part of Lupset. It will be our fourth Big Day Out this year and we have even more planned next year.

Tenancy Management Officer Natalie Rogers is leading the Big Day Out and said:

“It’s a crucial time to make sure we’re out in local communities offering support to customers who may be struggling with the cost of living. We’re here to make sure people receive all the help they’re entitled to, which is why events like this are so important.

“We’re also using this time to break the stigma around social housing and challenge negative views of areas these homes are in, as well as the people who live in them.

“Lupset in Wakefield is an area that struggles with this stigma. Many of our customers there love the security of living in social housing and where they want to be and bring up their families.”
